THE ART OF THE CUFF EXHIBITION AT LORD COCONUT: SEPT 25 – OCT 14
“You start out giving your hat, then you give your coat, then your French cuff shirt, then your skin, and finally your soul.” – Charles De Gaulle Lord Coconut will draw the focus back to the humble men’s cuff in the Art of the Cuff exhibition. Curated by Lord Coconut, Melbourne’s only handcrafted men’s accessories boutique, Art of the Cuff will be presented in conjunction with the 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival from the 25th of September until the 14th of October. The exhibition will feature a select group of Melbourne-based contemporary artists, jewellers & designers who will customise a French Cuff. The cuffs will link to their own artistic practice and will reflect the contemporary jewellery in-store at Lord Coconut. Among the featured artists is Melbourne street artist Ghost patrol, who has transformed his cuff into a pot plant featuring an embroidered image on the cuff, with a potted succulent plant housed inside. Also involved is Melbourne-based jeweller and taxidermist Julia de Ville, who uses symbols of mortality in her work “as an anchor into the present”. Hobart jeweller Ellen Pittman will also design a cuff for the exhibition. In the past, Pittman’s work has featured the upholstered leather of the Harpuka, a species of deep ocean fish found between New Zealand and the Bass Strait, as in her Fin Suite jewellery and cufflink collection. The worlds of jewellery and music will meet in the cuff customised by composer David Young, the Artistic Director of Chamber Made Opera, who will write a piece of music on his cuff. With such inventive artisans at the helm, Lord Coconut’s Art of the Cuff promises to be a truly exciting occasion.
